NFT Gaming: How to Make Money from Play To Earn Games

NFT Gaming - Play To Earn

I'm always looking for good ways to make an extra income and up until recently, I have mostly focused on betting and trading services and systems.

Whilst these are still my main go-to options for making money, I'm finding it difficult to ignore the opportunities arising in the cryptocurrency world.

I first heard about NFTs (Non-fungible tokens) when I was trying out Sorare, the fantasy football game that uses blockchain technology.

Basically, when you buy a digital player card with Sorare, you actually own it as an NFT on the Ethereum blockchain. This means that you are the sole owner of the card and you can trade or sell it.

The market has exploded in the past year with data showing that trading in NFTs reached $22bn in 2021, compared to $100m in 2020 (Data from DappRadar).

The Play To Earn model is a way to earn cryptocurrency from playing games, with rewards for being successful in the game or for simply owning an NFT in the game.

This presents an opportunity to provide a second income or potentially even enough to live on.

There are hundreds of Play To Earn games available on various devices, including PC/Mac, iOS and Android. Here I have listed some of the top games around and some that I have been trying out for myself.

Axie Infinity

Play To Earn - Axie Infinity
Axie Infinity is one of the big names in the Play To Earn sector with 2 million daily active users. The game is based around the Pokémon style battling games with trading mechanics and allows users to collect creatures called Axies.

The game has two modes, Adventure mode where you need to complete levels to progress and PVP, where you battle against other players.

You need to own three Axies to be able to play and as the game has become so popular, that will set you back a minimum of around $60-70 per Axie based on today's prices.

Although the initial investment for this game is higher than most, it offers many ways to make money, including breeding Axies or flipping them on the market.

It certainly offers a much more fun way of investing into crypto, but do exercise caution as it is not low-risk.

Coin Hunt World

Play To Earn - Coin Hunt World

I had to mention Axie Infinity with it being one of the biggest blockchain games, but now I want to move on to something that you can play without any investment other than your time.

Coin Hunt World is a mobile game where you can earn cryptocurrency whilst you are out and about walking or cycling. It completely free to play and if you're looking to get more exercise in, it's a good way to get motivated.

There is also a friendly Discord community where you can learn how to get the most out of the game.

In a nutshell, you need to explore the area around you to collect keys to unlock vaults. To unlock a vault you need the correct colour key and you also have to answer a trivia question.

You are then rewarded with cryptocurrency, such as Bitcoin or Ethereum.

I started playing the game whilst I was out walking each day and I built up a cryptocurrency balance that was worth around £20 in just a few days. Alright, it's probably not going to make you rich but it all adds up, right?

A great way to get fit and make some extra cash at the same time!

Splinterlands

Play to Earn - Splinterlands

Splinterlands is a card game similar to Hearthstone and Magic: The Gathering, except that the gameplay is automated, so deck building is the main focus.

You start with a set of base cards and you can play with these without investing any money. To climb the rank ladder though, you are going to need to either rent or buy cards from the market to construct more powerful decks.

Renting cards is a cheap option to get started and at the time of writing, you could buy £20 worth of the game currency DEC (Dark Energy Crystals) and have enough to climb up the Bronze ranks.

You need to get to Bronze II to start earning DEC from winning games and if you are used to playing this genre of game, you won't find this too difficult.

You can build up your DEC balance to buy cards which can then be played or rented out, or just cash your balance out as and when.

Sorare

Sorare Review

I already mentioned Sorare earlier and I have carried out a review on the site already, but I feel that it is definitely worth a section of it's own here!

Sorare combines the worlds of cryptocurrency and fantasy football, with digital trading cards that you actually own on the blockchain.

The idea is to collect cards and use them to enter tournaments each week where you can win more cards or cryptocurrency prizes.

I have little knowledge of football players and I have managed to make an easy profit from buying and selling cards on Sorare, as well as winning many ETH prizes from tournaments.

I highly recommend taking a look, whether you are a football buff or not. You can also get a free limited card when you purchase 5 cards using my link below.

Arc8

Arc8 is a mobile gaming app where you can compete in a selection of games against other players. At the time of writing there are 10 games on the platform including arcade, puzzle, card and action.

There is a free currency within the game, called credits, that you can earn by completing daily tasks and playing games.

The cryptocurrency side of it is the GMEE Tokens, which can be earned by joining tournaments and completing tasks.

You can practice at games to get better at them before entering tournaments and give yourself a higher chance of earning some crypto.

Skyweaver

This is another free-to-play trading card game like Splinterlands, except there is much more of a focus on gameplay as well as deck building.

As you progress to playing ranked games against other players and conquests, you have the opportunity to win Silver and Gold cards. These cards are NFTs that you will own and can be sold or traded.

Even without the cryptocurrency aspect, this game is really fun to play if card games are your thing.

These are just a small selection of Play to Earn games that I have come across and aside from Axie Infinity, I have already started cryptocurrency from them.

Hopefully you will find something here that you can make some extra income from. I am interested to hear about your experiences with Play To Earn gaming, so feel free to add your comments below or Contact me.
