Olympic Betting – A Punter’s Dream or Just An Interesting Distraction?

Posted by on July 23, 2012

It is of course impossible to ignore London 2012.

The build-up has been going on forever (can it really be five years since all that fuss about the logo?).

Even the torch relays seem to have been going on forever, leaving everyone to wonder why, in the endless British rain, the flame never goes out?   (In fact, it has been temporarily extinguished in the past).

And none of it seems to have been much fun… well, with the possible exception of the dancing motor-cop.

But it is here at last – or here it will be, on Friday – though you would barely think it was anything to get excited about, judging from  the monumentally dull official London 2012 website.

When you think about it… the Olympics needs to be very good, after all that has gone before.

The Premier League season twisted and turned from start to finish, and ended with an astonishing climax.

And a classic Euro 2012 tournament reached its zenith in the final, with Spain’s awe-inspiring demolition of the second best team in the competition, Italy, by an extraordinary four goals.

And an enjoyable Wimbledon also went down to the wire, with the perennially plucky Brit failing in the home straight (well, it wouldn’t be summer if he won it!).

And glory be, even the rain, it would appear, is now actually over… with temperatures of up to 30C forecast in the capital this week (though I suspect we may yet see the impossible British weather sulk back into its perennial winter).

Can now the Olympics live up to all that has gone before??

And – more to our point here at www.laybackandgetrich.com – should serious punters care?

Well, I’m afraid I have to be a party pooper on this one…

For my answer has to be – NO WAY.

If you are not already a seasoned punter on synchronised swimming, now is not the time to start!

Instead, if you feel the need to bet, stick to what you know.

Betting on men’s 200m butterfly may feel innovative but if you don’t understand it, I’m sorry but you’re just another bookie’s sucker..

And anyway, there is some good betting to be had on the things we DO know about…..

Nuno will be back within a day or two to resume his Total Tennis Trading testing…. (well, why not, it does look a bit like Wimbledon – The Sequel!)

And I intend to dust off Total Football Trading, as the soccer competition should attract a fair bit of liquidity owing to the remarkable entry of a British team.

But that’s it.

No betting, for me, on the diving, the trampoline, the fencing or even on the 100m men’s final!

One of the great secrets of betting is to specialise – see my 5th Pillar of Betting Wisdom for more on what this means for trading, for instance.

And you can’t specialise in a couple of weeks.

Be professional, and remember… we still have a glorious summer ahead, full of wonderful languorous evening racing, and the return of the Premier League….. :-)

I love it!
