…. I’m going to run a public test of my very own laying system, which I intend to update on a (more or less) daily basis. It’s based on some principles very dear to my heart, which basically come down to assessing value. So if I can’t find value, I won’t make a selection, but if I can, who knows how many picks I might make!
It follows that there may be zero, one, or more than one lays per day, and I intend to stick to very short odds, so as to avoid too many heart attacks. UK courses only, as liquidity in Ireland can be an issue.
Bank is 1000 points, with a stake of 10 points per lay.

Final system update on 13/11/2011 -
Unfortunately gentlemen, I am going to have to suspend this service. Although it has proven both popular and profitable, with every single week ending with an improved system balance, I am finding the selection process too time-consuming to balance against all the other demands on my time (many of which emanate from this site!).
(Either that or I will need to start charging for it, as it is taking a lot longer than I’d expected to find selections….!)
To review all system results since we started on 8th October 2011, click here for the weekly logs, or download the results spreadsheet here. The final system balances were as follows:
- ‘Tipping balance’ (based on odds taken) = +115.9 points.
- BSP balance = +111.8 points.
The strike rate was 82%, which is satisfying, as many of the selections were at very short odds.
My personal conclusions –
- Laying is a comfortable way to bet. High strike rates make the journey relatively pleasant, and the discipline of having to assess an entire field is good experience for any gambler.
- The whole process benefits from a selective approach. I found it easier to focus on a few open races with several realistic contenders, and construct a ‘story’ around them, rather than to try to analyse every single card and every single race. This led in turn to fewer selections and an 82% strike rate.
I do hope you boys have added some nice profits along the way ….. I have added ‘Lay Lucy Lay’ to the Passed Systems list, as a prompt to myself to write up this system at some point! 7 short-priced lays so far, all of which have lost. (Should have been 8 if I’d stuck to my guns on Wednesday – darn!). So at 10points a go, we’re now up to the tune of 66.5 points! (assumes 5% Betfair commission).

I have suspended my laying service as I found it too time-consuming. There is quite a lot of interest so I may restart in the New Year, depending on other demands on my time.
