Hi everyone, frothing-at-the-mouth Lee here with my report on weeks 19 and 20 of the Lucrative Racing Trust’s ‘Lay The Favourite‘ service.

Lucrative Racing Trust - Lay The Favourite

I was out shopping the other day when this old bloke walked past me.

‘Cheer up, lad,’ he said, ‘you look like you’ve been licking Marmite off a skunk’s tail-pipe.’

To be honest, I wish my dad wouldn’t talk to me like that in public.

But he had a point. My golden Lucrative goose keeps laying rotten eggs, and I’m not making a good job of concealing the disappointment.

So, it looks like my pathetic attempt to get The Boss to revoke her curse fared almost as badly as too many of the selections over the last fortnight. Those of a nervous disposition are advised to look away now… whereas those of a malignant disposition can sit back and snigger uncontrollably at the following results:

12 bets placed (6 won, 6 lost)

50% strike-rate (don’t need the calculator for that one)

£172.26 loss for the last two weeks (that clunking noise is the sound of my leaden tears hitting the floor)

At the risk of sounding like a cracked record, the continuing consolation is that the trial as a whole remains in profit to the tune of £409.49. The fact that Betfair are currently offering odds of 1.01 that I wouldn’t be quite so philosophical if I’d joined the service at the start of this month is of no concern at present.

As for this blasted curse …

The Antidote

I had to unleash the heinous dark force that is the Bon Jovi back catalogue to rid my Lucrative Place Bets trial of its hoodoo.

I thought fighting fire with fire was a sensible tactic at the time, but apparently this contravened several clauses regarding psychological torture in the Geneva Convention.

Things have got so bad that I’ve had to buy a copy of Skew Trader Pro to try and make enough cash to pay off all the compensation claims.

So, I suppose I’ll just have to get rat-arsed on Ace Lager and dance round a hastily-assembled bonfire in the back garden like a demented pixie instead. I sincerely doubt this will lift the curse, but it’ll definitely scare the living daylights out of the neighbours. Again.

Oh yes, those results. That’s them underneath, with the whole shebang available by clicking here.

Hello, Ben here with a review of my first week of publishing my football lays here on Lucy’s site.

(And if you’d like to jump directly to the tips page, it’s here).

I must admit going public with my lays has really created a whole new feel to my betting experience.

Despite doing everything I have done in the past the same, my winning bets have felt so much more rewarding and the late losing bets have hurt that much more!

One issue I have had since publishing is advising what odds to take on the lays. I commit to posting my tips before 11am to ensure everyone who is interested can follow them, however, with some matches having low liquidity and prices changing through the day, the odds can be all over the place!

In the past I have only had to worry about myself, so it’s as easy as making my selections and laying at a price I feel is right through the day. To try and bring some order I have advised a price I feel is fair and also a ‘do not lay above price’ that I feel just isn’t worth risking above those odds.

Week 1 Results Log

I have recorded two sets of results, one for all my tips at the odds I have managed to secure, and one which follows my advised prices.

Summary

Week one has been quite disappointing, leaving us roughly where we started out! (Well, 60p up at pre-kickoff prices, and £14.80 down at morning odds).

There were four matches where the team we layed scored a winner in the last ten minutes which has really hurt!

If just a couple of them hadn’t been scored, the results would be looking good. This of course is part of betting and with my method we will, at times, be laying favourites so there may often be a risk of a late goal. A possible solution for the more risk-averse of you out there would be to trade out after 80 minutes if the match is level, for either an even profit on all outcomes, or zero liability on the team we layed to start with.

I personally leave the bets as I have found in the long term it works out more profitable. But certainly trading in this way would have made for a comfortable ride using my tips during the past week.

I’ll be back in a week or so with my next update. In the meantime, you can pick up my tips every day here.

I sense, but cannot prove, that betting is increasingly becoming socially acceptable, and moving more into the media mainstream. Which is a social phenomenon that occasionally has some curious side-effects.

A good example is a current BBC sport website article, that, in all but name, deals with the question of football betting systems.

Auntie! Who’d have thought?

Mark Lawrenson + moustache!

Of course, the subject is presented in an acceptable framework. The article is ostensibly a discussion of Mark Lawrenson’s performance as BBC’s football pundit over the course of the recently concluded Premier league season.

According to the Beeb, Mark’s predictions over the year would have made you a profit of 18 points if you had bet on all of them. The same article also goes on to explain how much better you would have done by following him than, say, slavishly betting on favourites.

So it turns out we have all been buying betting systems after all. And a simpler one there never was. Follow the licence fee payer’s own pundit and win.

Deep down, we all knew the licence fee was worth it. And now it can even pay for itself!

However, a closer reading of Mark’s performance does suggest an alternative, more profitable approach than merely copying him. For it turns out that Mark clearly subscribes to the idea that the modern game is dominated by a few superpowers.

No fewer than six of the breakaway top seven teams all amassed a lot more points in his version of the final table than in the real thing. Only Spurs did better than Mark predicted (which may also suggest he believes their seat at the top table could be a little more temporary than applies in the other six cases).

Taking the top seven in turn, the comparison between Lawrenson’s League and the Premier League looks like this.

Manchester United – LL 96 points; PL 89 points

Manchester City – LL 86 points; 78 points

Arsenal – LL 91(!) points; PL 73 points

Chelsea – LL 79 points; PL 75 points

Everton – LL 73 points; 63 points

Liverpool – LL 68 points; PL 61 points

Tottenham – LL 60 points; PL 72 points

So what?, you may be thinking, he just lumps his money on the favourite. What else is new?

But the point is, he’s still 18 points up, in spite of an unjustified bias in his approach.

Now, given that Mark’s predictions tend to be fairly mainstream (United to win every time etc.), and likely therefore both to reflect and lead opinion, maybe whenever he predicts one of the big seven will win, a good strategy would be to lay them.

If you assume the average Saturday punter is likely to align themselves with the voice of the BBC, the real value may be in a contrarian strategy of this type.

And, for those of you who are weary of the anodyne analysis that passes for punditry on the BBC’s Match of the Day show, there would also be something quite satisfying about the act of writing to Mark at the end of the season to let him know how much money you’d made by disagreeing with every single thing he’d ever said.

So I’m going to do it right here.

Each week in the 2013-14 season, I will lay all the “big 7″ Premier League teams whenever Mark backs them to win. And I’ll track my results through till May.

Additionally, with a separate betting bank, I will back every tip Mark supplies that doesn’t fall into the Superpower Lay strategy. So hopefully, I will also benefit from his demonstrated out-performance across the whole league.

Depending on my success or otherwise, I hope to have a robust system I can then use with larger stakes from 2014 onwards.

Let me know if you decide to join in with either or both approaches. It should be fun, and, quite possibly, very profitable.

Hi there, Lucy here once more, with my fifth report on the First Place Winners trial.

This update covers four weeks, unlike previous versions (which did two). Otherwise my story is, unfortunately, unchanged.

I joked last time that the law of averages was surely bound to put in an appearance sooner or later, and deliver a decent couple of weeks’ progress.

How wrong I was…

First Place Winners

The only good thing to report is that the ratcheted staking plan is stemming the losses.

Yep, that’s the good news out of the way.

The truth is, it’s just been hopeless. I have no sense there is an underlying plan. There are no messages from the tipster. Nothing to cling onto.

To specifics however… the main statistics from the last month are as follows.

18 valid selections were advised, and all were placed per the staking plan in the win and place markets at Betfair SP

We had 3 winners this time (which is exactly 3 more than in my last report!), which improved our overall strike rate to a still dismal 14.7%

Seven place finishes also represented an improvement, bringing the place strike rate up to 32% – which is still an appalling level for a service which depends on regular placing

The betting bank (which was initiated at £1,000 twelve long weeks ago) fell yet again, to a new record low of £485.64.

It is extraordinary to think that, even with the protection of a ratcheted staking plan, we have managed to burn through over half our betting bank in just 75 bets.

One thing I have really started to notice this month has been the dramatic decline in our staking levels.

My first ever punt with FPW comprised a £6 bet in the win market and a £24 bet to place (reflecting the 20:80 staking split between the two).

As we are operating a staking system that takes account of the current balance however, today’s bets were for the grand sums of £2.80 to win and £11.21 to place!

So even if we do ever get a turnaround, the stakes are now so low, the chances are we will struggle to regain lost ground.

Summary

First Place Winners has so far been an unmitigated disaster.

And I find it depressing in the extreme that it is mathematically impossible for the bank to go bust with this staking plan. Because it means I will have to see the trial through to the very end!

If you can bring yourself to the review the wasteland that is the complete results log, you can do so by clicking here.

I’ll be back in a month’s time. Surely something good must happen soon.

It’s quite a while since I added anything to my Back to Basics Betting series of articles, and I’m starting to feel guilty about it. So I am going to try and post a bit more regularly on this subject!

Now something I do get asked about a lot, ever since the closure of the Lay Lucy Lay thread, is how I analyse horse racing.

Often, people who feel endlessly confident about backing football teams – based invariably on limited analysis – will freeze at the sight of a racecourse. Because it all just seems so random.

And, sometimes, it can be.

But equally, it is relatively straightforward to come to a sensible assessment of most horse races in advance, as there are heaps of free information around.

Indeed, there’s way too much!

But: all you need is on the Racing Post website…. (and no, I’m not affiliated to them in any way!)

Racing Post

OK I have four basic guidelines for horse racing newbies….

1. Lay horses, don’t back them.

It can be just as profitable, and the strike rate is better. So it makes for a more comfortable ride. Provided of course, you adopt a sensible approach.

The basic idea is to copy the bookies, and exploit the natural human instinct to herd around the favourite.

Bookmakers spend most of their time and money laying favourites (or second favourites). And so should you. Not only does it feel good to be copying the bookies, you will also find that:

The odds for favourites on Betfair are very similar to those offered by the bookmakers. Which means we can lay them for a similar price, and aim to make similar profits.

It keeps our liabilities low. (NB Never lay longshots!)

You may feel the bookies still have a huge advantage as they don’t have to pay commission when they win, but they do have to maintain offices full of suited managers and call centre operators.

Also, more subtly, they pretty much have to take bets whether they want to or not. Heavily backed favourites such as the great Frankel are a bookie’s nightmare.

2. Use the Racing Post to analyse a race, then work out the chances of each of the shortest-priced horses.

Spend a few minutes reviewing the past experience of the shortest priced four or five horses:

Has our selection last run within the last 40 days? (Good if yes)

Is its top speed comparable with its rivals?

Has it won races at or above this class previously?

If this is a hurdles race or a steeplechase, does it have prior experience?

Has it previously won races at this course; over this distance; on this going; carrying this much weight?

Some would add that you should add the trainer, jockey, and draw into the equation. But I believe these are secondary factors, and the italicised items above count most.

You can glean all this information from the Racing Post race cards, and/or by clicking on individual horse names.

Racing Post Racecards contain a mass of valuable, free information

Now this is where a degree of personal judgement comes in.

A horse scores one point for every category where, in your view, it has achieved or done sufficiently well e.g.

Does the Top Speed rating compare favourably with the other horses? (i.e. greater than, equal to, close to).

Has it finished either first or in a strong second place over this distance?

Has it done well (first/second) in a race on this course before ?

What about over this type of going, or a race of this class? (NB Class numbers go up as quality goes down, so class 6 is low and 1 is high).

Finally, has it had success over hurdles or in chases (where appropriate)?

Look out for anomalies where a horse has just been promoted into a new class, or is competing at a longer distance than before, or maybe is tackling hurdles for the first time. It is surprising how often market prices don’t take account of important changes.

Now add up your points and see how the favourite fares against its nearest rivals.

You might be surprised at the outcome, with the declared favourite having no particular advantage over its competition, or indeed appearing to represent an inferior option.

3. If you conclude that the favourite (or second favourite) is at risk, with at least two other horses having as good or an even better chance, look to lay it.

An important part of laying is deciding on an appropriate price, and there isn’t enough space in this article to explain how I like to go about that. However, you should ensure you never lay at a price above the highest price currently offered by the bookmakers on oddschecker.com.

Ideally, you should take the midpoint in odds offered by the bookmakers, and lay at that price, but you may struggle to get matched. That said, don’t be afraid to try! It’s amazing how often prices do move to a level near the off that you’d never have thought they’d come down to.

Finally, if you don’t get matched, don’t panic. It’s better not to place a bet, than to place one at too long a price, just to be in the game.

4. Consider laying more than one horse in the race.

You can significantly reduce your commission bill, and thus your average commission percentage, by placing several lay bets on the same race. This approach will cause you to win some bets without incurring some or all of the usual commission, as your win may be offset by a losing bet.

Now the idea that losing bets may be helpful may sound counter-intuitive, but the mathematics are robust. It’s very important you reduce your commission costs to the lowest level possible, as doing so can make a significant difference in the long run to your overall profits.

And if you still think the idea of multiple lays is unappealing, consider this. As soon as you lay more than one horse, you are guaranteeing that at least one of your bets will win (assuming the race doesn’t finish as a dead heat!). Now doesn’t that make you feel better!?

So… is that all there is to it?

Well, no. It also pays to specialise, and learn the traits that apply to certain types of race. I did something like this in Lay Lucy Lay; though whether you can tell precisely what from the articles is open to question!

But there should be enough in this article to start you thinking. Remember: keep your liabilities very low, especially at the beginning, and only bet with a separate betting bank, using monies you can afford to lose. (And if you fear betting’s not for you, and might consume funds you need for stuff that really matters, have a read of the Gamble Aware website).

Do let me know how you get on.

Hello, Lucy here with my latest update on our ongoing Match Day Profits trial.

After reporting slightly more positive news last time, we’ve since lost more money. Indeed, over half our bank has now gone.

Match Day Profits

Performance Over Weeks 9 and 10

There have been 16 tips received over the last fortnight, and, as discussed previously, they again featured a whole range of markets, bookies, leagues, bet types, and so on. Indeed, the only consistent thing to date has been the service’s remarkable ability to find new ways of wasting my money. It borders on the chaotic.

The betting bank was set at 200 points ten long weeks ago, and has generally fallen steadily ever since. Last time however, we’d recovered to 137.65, which was scarcely a cause for celebration, but at least suggested that performance might yet stabilise. Sadly, such hopes proved illusory.

We lost a further 41.13 points over the last two weeks, which brings the bank to a new low for the trial of 96.53. This represents a total loss of 103.47 points, or 51.74%.

The strike rate has also fallen again, to a dismal 35.37%. This is remarkably low, given that we are generally taking prices around evens.

Trial Status

My Match Day Profits trial has so far been little short of an unmitigated disaster.

I hate writing miserable reports, but it’s been so hard to think of a single nice thing to say about the last ten weeks with this product. However, in order to reduce my sense of ongoing gloom, I will now revert to monthly reports. Maybe bigger gaps between updates will give Match Day more time for an improbable recovery.

Let’s hope so anyway!

There are lots of ways to sell a product.

But in the betting systems world there would appear to be just two basic approaches. The first screams scam and the second honest-but-dull.

(And before any jaded wags suggest I am being too kind by including the second category, kindly consider the measured sales pages of nice people such as the Lucrative Racing Trust, Winning Racing Tips and Mathematician Betting).

Unfortunately, shoddy sales techniques attract all the attention, and give the whole industry a bad name. To the point where, after a while, we all get used to it, and even learn to expect and tolerate a degree of over-claiming.

Naturally, this makes it that bit harder for the honest guys (and girls!) to be believed too.

(Which, I might add in passing, may explain why so few people have jumped on Lucrative’s astonishing Place Bets product, in spite of the compelling evidence on this site that it’s a low-risk winner, and the near certainty they will eventually have to close it to new members for liquidity reasons).

But for now, I want to talk about the over-claimers.

Reference exhibit A: The Betting Siphon system.

Betting Siphon

Yes, for just £17, plus value added tax, this extraordinary product will, apparently, free you from your day job within a week.

They even have the temerity to add the word “comfortably” to the end of that sentence!

Not only that, but you are also going to have a lot of free time on your hands because it runs on autopilot.

Now, remarkably, in spite of going on and on (and on), the vacuous sales page never gets round to mentioning the merest detail of what the product actually, you know, does.

You cannot glean from it which sports it will place bets on.

Nor whether it will trade, back or lay.

Maybe it will just randomly throw your money at Betfair, multiplying stakes Martingale-style until you secure a profit?

Who knows?

Who cares?

What it will definitely do however is fill your life with wall-to-wall wads of wonga, up to that improbably precise £8,432 figure in fact, and no doubt sometimes more.

Definitely worth £17 of anybody’s money, plus indeed the VAT, though you can get it for just £7 if you’re a bit cash-strapped, simply by exiting the sales page, then accepting their “NO! WAIT! DON’T LEAVE!!!!” message.

Helpfully, for the less mathematically articulate amongst us, Betting Siphon even illustrate that £17 minus £7 = £10 by showing us a photo of a tenner. Oddly though, the button at the bottom also claims you can get in for FREE, which I suspect is a pasting error from a different squeeze page.

No wait! Don't leave!

Honestly, you’d think they’d thrown this stuff together in a hurry.

And if you think their written sales pitch is bad, my, you should sit through the video.

It takes hard selling to a level I (oddly) found myself half-admiring. Although it keeps promising to show me “undisputable” (sic) proof the system works – and unfortunately never quite gets round to it – I couldn’t help watching all the way to the end.

Maybe it’s the attraction of revulsion?

But even that’s not all.

The bit that really got me fascinated comes towards the finish, when the narrator unexpectedly announces he is willing to pay you £150 just for giving this a go!

£150 free cash!

Now admittedly, he doesn’t exactly explain how this £150 payment is going to travel from him to me, but still…

I find myself really tempted.

Of course, the common sense part of me believes there is no chance of ever getting paid by this guy.

But there is the naughty side that is tempted to try to extract his cash out of sheer devilment.

Now I’m currently feeling quite ill, wrapped up beneath a duvet, just wanting to get better. Which may explain my mood, and the evil sense that I want to take these guys out right now.

But maybe, just maybe, I should do it anyway…?

What do you think?

It’s Lucy once more, with an update on week #13 of life with Roberto’s free football and tennis bets. And, unfortunately, we’ve had a second successive losing week, which brings us back almost to where we started.

It’s such a pity, as we had such a long winning run with weeks #2 to #9 all delivering profit.

Still. As I keep saying, losing is part of winning. Weird but true.

(And incidentally, if you’re new to Roberto’s service and have no idea what I’m talking about, begin here, then browse through the thread).

Roberto

With the end of the football season looming, Roberto has turned his attention exclusively to tennis, and produced no fewer than eleven selections. Unfortunately though, we only had four winning bets, which in turn led to an overall loss of £38.70.

This brings our betting bank back down to £1022.90. So we are 2.29% up overall.

I mentioned last week that Roberto doesn’t enjoy losing one bit (an excellent trait in a tipster, in my opinion). So unsurprisingly, his email to me today was as heartfelt as ever, plus it contained some remarkable insights into the world of professional tennis!

“After a good start of the week with 4 winning tips in a row I decided to exceptionally increase my bets for the Roma tennis tournament. Usually I don’t bet in the early rounds of a tournament because many results are illogical, and sometimes some matches where there is no live streaming are fixed, even if mostly in minor tournaments. But this time I made an exception to my rule and this was my mistake. Only in Monday 5 tips, 4 losing and 1 void!

“I want to explain one thing: the final results were absolutely illogical considering that I backed players in good recent form, playing at home; with their entourage very confident in their performance (I know personally some trainers and some ATP players, so there was also a sort of “insider” information, apparently). But they lost without fighting!

“The day after I gave an accumulator and the results were ridiculous. I say only one thing… Ivanovic beaten by Urszula Radwanska: anyone who knows enough about tennis can understand that a similar result can be explained only with some kind of problems for Ivanovic or with other illegal reasons.

“However I repeat that in early rounds similar strange results can happen, so basically the problem was my choice to make more bets in the first rounds of my home tournament (I played many years in those courts in the past and this gave me more confidence, without a real reason).

It’s hard for me to comment personally as I know so little about tennis. But it’s certainly made me feel better about betting on horse racing!

When I first decided to review ZCode, I’d just had a bang on the head. I was really dizzy.

And yet, even now I’m better, every time I look at it, I start feeling the same way.

I said last time that I thought ZCode might be “beyond testing”. And that’s a conclusion I’m sticking with.

It’s remarkable, annoying, overblown, over-priced, self-important and just possibly brilliant all at the same time.

I have never seen anything quite like ZCode.

Zcode

I mentioned a number of concerns in my first impressions post, and don’t want to go over all the same ground. But most of my points there still stand.

So this is going to be a Last Impressions post.

There are a number of points I must make though.

Firstly, and it bears repeating, ZCode has a stupid price tag.

I mean it: it makes no sense.

You should not be spending around £160 every month to get advice from a service provider who then tells you you can start off with a bankroll as low as $100 !

Secondly, if I have just spent this kind of money, I don’t want then to be met with a sales pitch for something else.

£160 or so a month should buy me absolutely everything.

And yet once I’m in the VIP club I’m presented with the “ZCode Almanac offer”, which apparently is reserved for “premium members”. Lucky them!

Now the Almanac appears to be some clever software that allows me to back-test any random sport betting theory I’ve come up with against historic data.

An attractive idea in principle. But the notion of spending another $199 (plus VAT once converted into Sterling) to get hold of this clever bit of kit is surely absurd.

Thirdly, I’m surprised there is so little emphasis on value.

They say there is, but really there isn’t.

Most of the package concentrates on the accuracy of the automated picking, but very little attention is directed towards getting the best possible price.

For instance, the bookmaker page features just six bookies, and the commentary that goes alongside proposes you barely need more than two or three accounts.

This strikes me as casual, bordering on suicidal. And it is quite inconsistent with my experience of searching for value.

Even when they talk about picking accuracy, I don’t think I quite get it.

Maybe it’s just me!

For instance, the number “86.5%” appears a great deal on the website (and indeed in the sales literature).

ZCode claim that this is the statistical likelihood of ‘history always repeating itself’.

Now, if we ignore for a moment the semantic diarrhoea implicit in that statement – clearly, nothing repeats itself ‘always’ if 13.5% of the time something different happens – it’s a completely useless piece of information anyway.

Just because Manchester United win the vast majority of their home games, it doesn’t follow that backing them every time to win at home will be a winning strategy. It depends on the price you secure at the time.

Fourthly, they just won’t cut the chat and get on with it.

Many of the automated picks are embedded within interactive fora, so you are going to have to scroll through a lot of conversations to get to the good stuff.

I just want to know who to bet on, not get involved in dreary transatlantic e-backslapping.

A corollary of this point is that the whole thing appears be written in some vague approximation to English. I found myself wading through lots of pseudo-IT chat about “cracking the sports code” (sorry but what does that actually mean!?), reading page after page in a kind of daze, until I would come to and wonder what the hell it was all about.

Take the following choice gems.

“How do you calculate the power ranking difference? There are two metrics shown: power rank (below the battery) and power ranks indicator (graph). Which one is used and how? I didn’t place any bet yesterday because I used the difference between power ranks indicator. Thanks !”

OR

“During the regular season (since June) when we lose a C bet we simply do a recovery session with double unit size. We did it a lot in the past, no problem. However when we are so early in the season, we don’t want to do any recovery sessions, we still don’t know real teams’ strength and weaknesses. That’s why we better take the suckers way out with +1.5 and move on to the next series”.

Gotcha, dude.

And yet if you can plough through all this nonsense, I still have a hunch there is something worth living with here.

It doesn’t help that I have placed a few bets in May that have all been uniformly rubbish. But if you take a good look at the long-term graphs – and this is one product you really need to view over the long term – the claimed performance is mighty impressive.

But I’m sorry, I just can’t face it.

I don’t believe my readers are seriously going to shell out the kind of money they would need to pay to get involved.

So I’m going to give it a Neutral rating, and admit I’m beaten.

The best thing about this product is that you can get it for 60 days risk-free with a bullet-proof Clickbank warranty. Take a surfer phrasebook with you — put on an Hawaiian shirt — test it out for 60 days for yourself — then let me know what you think.

I’m sure if you can speak fluent dude, you’ll think it’s awesome.

In the meantime, Chelsea are playing Benfica tonight, and I’ve got a little trade going on that I understand on the Correct Score market. Simple, and not even a little bit awesome.

And then maybe I’ll settle down with a copy of “One Up On Wall Street” by Peter Lynch. He of the “Invest In What You Know” mantra.
